RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
