Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
