Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
